Welcome to the Maths Village website. Here you can find out more about the EMF Maths Village, and see what we're planning for EMF 2026.
What Is The Maths Village?
The Maths Village is a village at Electromagnetic Field (EMF) run by a group of mathematicians and maths communicators from all over the UK - including researchers, authors, presenters, YouTubers and hobbyists.
This year, the Maths Village will once again be one of EMF's Workshop Villages, hosting workshops from the main programme alongside our own content.
We're also a place where any stray friendly mathematicians are welcome to join and camp - we'll have tea and coffee making facilities, and you can drop by and say hello anytime, or drop us an email with any questions (details below).
Like all other EMF villages, we follow the EMF Code of Conduct.
What's Happening In The Maths Village?
Here's a list of activities happening in the Maths Village this year.
We'll also have our Pop-up Shop, which will pop up for half an hour each day and sell a range of mathematical goodies, books and toys. The opening times for the pop-up shop can be found by solving a mathematical puzzle, which will be posted on the walls of the Maths village tent and can be downloaded as a PDF here:
Friday 17th
Pie chart badge making
16:00 to 17:00 - Alison Kiddle
Drop-in to the Maths Village to make your own pie chart pin badge to represent your favourite data. We'll have some sample data set you can use if you don't have your own favourite yet.
Maths Village Drop-In

Drop-in to the Maths Village for some mathematical fun - including puzzles and exhibits from MathsCity in Leeds, sand tessellation, giant polyhedron building, print your own monomatch card game, live Droste-cam, and freebies including magazines for the mathematically curious.
The Maths of Quantum Mechanics Workshop
17:30 to 18:30 - Bryony Lanigan
In the quantum mechanical world, particles in boxes aren't as trapped as you might like to think they would be thanks to the phenomenon of quantum tunnelling. In this workshop we will work through the mathematics of a "particle in a box" and derive the maths behind this seemingly counter-intuitive result. You should be familiar with (or at least aware of) integration and differentiation as well as trigonometry and exponential functions (up to AS level maths), but no prior comfort with quantum mechanics is needed.

MathsJam
20:30 to 22:30
MathsJam is a monthly opportunity for like-minded self-confessed maths enthusiasts to get together in a pub and share stuff they like. Puzzles, games, problems, or just anything they think is cool or interesting. We'll be turning the Maths Village tent into a temporary pub for the evening to host a series 5 minute lightning talks on a range of mathematical topics followed by a MathsJam evening. Maths!
Saturday 18th
Maths Village Drop-In

Maths Face Painting
15:30 to 16:30
Drop-in to the Maths Village to get some maths painted on your face. We will have face painters with a range of artistic and mathematical ability available. We'll happy attempt to paint anything from your favourite integer to a proof of Pythagoras's theorem. Please note that fractals will only be painted to a finite level of detail.
Sunday 19th
The Maths of Dobble
14:30 to 15:30 - Katie Steckles & Alison Kiddle
Dobble is a popular card game with a surprisingly mathematical structure hidden inside it. In this workshop, we'll delve into the way that monomatch games of all sizes can be built, and you'll get the chance to produce your own mini-monomatch game to take home.

Dome Building Workshop
16:00 to 17:00
Drop-in to the Maths Village tent to help us build a Leonardo dome using a dome kit borrowed from MathsCity Leeds. The domes we will build will be big enough to sit under, so you'll be able to sit under one just before we disassemble it.
